From fertiliser to airtiliser
Researchers at Stanford University have recently demonstrated that ammonia can be extracted from the air. What is now a lab experiment could, within a few years, become a practical solution for farmers, allowing them to generate their own nitrogen fertiliser on-site. This would eliminate the need for expensive, polluting industrial fertilisers, cutting costs and CO₂ emissions, as traditional fertiliser production relies heavily on natural gas. It could also help address Europe’s nitrogen crisis, which has stalled major construction projects in our home country, the Netherlands, due to environmental concerns.
Air mining for everyone
One of the most exciting aspects of air mining is its decentralisation. Instead of massive factories producing fertiliser and shipping it worldwide, air mines could operate hyper-locally — allowing farmers (and the rest of us) to generate resources on their own land. This reduces dependence on large suppliers and democratises access to essential materials. In an urban context, it could also decrease the need for polluting factories in densely populated areas. Since air is everywhere, localised micro-mining could create an entirely new decentralised resource network.
